Supporters’ contributions have provided the important resources that have helped make UNC become the highly regarded academic medical center it is today. The Medical Foundation of NC, Inc. is honored to recognize the many generous donors to the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals who, through their gifts, support students, faculty and the citizens we serve across the state. Giving to medicine demonstrates leadership and a special commitment to caring, discovery, teaching, and hope. To honor and express our appreciation of these benefactors, the following recognition societies have been established:
The W. Reece Berryhill Society
Established in 2002, the W. Reece Berryhill Society recognizes alumni and friends who support UNC Medicine through any type of deferred gift. Through their generosity and foresight, Berryhill members play a vital role in securing the future of medicine at UNC. The Society is named in honor of the late Dr. Berryhill, a longtime dean and leader of the School of Medicine and who is widely recognized as “the father of modern medicine at UNC.”
Membership in the Berryhill Society is open to individuals who wish to help assure that UNC Medicine continues to thrive for generations to come. Acceptable gifts include a variety of estate planning tools such as charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, life insurance, will bequests and gifts of retirement plans. Membership offers opportunities to be more fully engaged with the key members of the Medical School and Hospitals administrative team and fellow Berryhill members.
All Berryhill Society members who provide documentation of the deferred planned gifts will be submitted for membership in the University-wide planned gift recognition group, The Gerrard Society.
Loyalty Fund Associates
Established in 1989-90, the Loyalty Fund Associates program was created to recognize the importance of significant private alumni support of the UNC School of Medicine. Loyalty Fund Associates are our leaders and their gifts are key to the success of the Loyalty Fund campaign each year. The Junior Associates gift club was established in 1999 to recognize recent graduates who make significant annual gifts. Graduates of four years or less who give $250 or more, and graduates between five and nine years out who give $500 or more, qualify as Junior Associates.
As an Associate or Junior Associate, one’s involvement is not limited to financial support. Associates are invited to Chapel Hill to participate in academic and extracurricular programs to broaden their relationship with the School of Medicine.
The Co-Founders’ Club
Co-Founders’ is the annual recognition society of The Medical Foundation of NC, Inc. that honors individuals who have given $2,000 or more cumulatively to any area of UNC School of Medicine or UNC Hospitals from July 1 to June 30.
Established in 1966, Co-Founders’ celebrates a partnership that continually helps to improve the health of North Carolinians and many others. Alumni and friends provide unrestricted and restricted gifts for scholarships and fellowships, research, programs, lectureships and professorships. Together, these private annual gifts provide steady resources that are absolutely critical to our leadership in medicine. We thank these donors for investing in our medical education, research and service missions.
Members are listed in the Annual Report of The Medical Foundation of North Carolina, Inc. and on the Annual Donor recognition displays in the lobby of Bondurant Hall, the main School of Medicine building. Co-Founders’ are invited to participate in educational opportunities and special events and receive news and information through the Medical Bulletin and other communications. Additionally members may receive recognition in the giving societies of the University or other areas within medicine to which their gift was made.
