SECU Foundation pledges $1 million for new UNC Health Care hospice facility in Chatham County

Last month the State Employees Credit Union (SECU) Foundation committed $1 million to the Medical Foundation of North Carolina for construction of the SECU Jim & Betsy Bryan Hospice Home of UNC Health Care in Chatham County.Scheduled to open in 2016, the new home will serve area patients and their families, providing an end-of-life care option not previously available to local residents. “We are excited about this project and pleased to be working in partnership with the Medical Foundation to help bring a new inpatient and residential hospice care facility to the local medical community and citizens in Chatham County,” remarked Jim Johnson, Chairman of SECU’s Board of Directors. “Through the challenge grant, SECU members are helping provide the highest level of care, compassion and support for patients and their families needing hospice services.”
Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl donates $10,000 to UNC Children’s

N.C. Children’s Hospital received a $10,000 gift in recognition of Team North Carolina’s participation in last week’s Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge charity golf tournament. The North Carolina duo of head football coach Larry Fedora and head basketball coach Roy Williams earned a total of $20,000 in winnings, which the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl will split between the coaches’ chosen charity, UNC Children’s, and an endowed scholarship at the University of North Carolina.
$3 million gift expands opportunities for UNC Medicine and Arts & Sciences students at UNC

A planned gift from Frank Moretz, B.A. ’71, M.D. ’75 and Resident ’78 will have an enduring impact on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The $3 million bequest will be distributed evenly among the department of psychology in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences, the department of anesthesiology in the UNC School of Medicine and the UNC School of Medicine’s Asheville campus. Moretz, a three-degree Tar Heel and recently retired anesthesiologist who practiced in the Asheville area, said this gift is his way of thanking the university for setting him up for the success he has achieved.”UNC gave me great opportunities and was great preparation for a very successful career,” Moretz said. “I wanted to show my appreciation.”
For Ginger Finley, the holiday season means a time to give back to UNC Lineberger

For Raleigh native Ginger Finley, community service and giving back has always been a way of life. She started by volunteering in the nursery at VCU during high school and continued at UNC Hospitals as a college student at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her life was then touched by cancer when she lost her stepfather to leukemia and supported a close friend who battled cancer for years. Ginger responded by getting involved at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. She and her husband, Ed, have been active members of the UNC Lineberger Board of Visitors for more than 20 years. They have loved learning about the latest advances in cancer prevention and treatment and supporting the cancer center with their time and resources.

Donor Story – Brent and Dana Jones

Although Brent and Dana Jones reside in Danville CA, Chapel Hill is just as much “home,” partly because their daughter Courtney played for the UNC Women’s Soccer Team — two-time national champions. The team chose to support the Patient & Family Resource Center through an annual event that drew the Jones family closer to the Cancer Center.
After meeting with Dr. Don Rosenstein and team, Dana recalls: “Brent and I knew instantly this is what we wanted to get behind personally. For patients and caregivers to have access to this safe haven of emotional support, educational resources and assistance with financial hardship is so vital, but not a given in every cancer hospital. It signaled to us that UNC Lineberger is a cancer center with a heart that puts patients and families first. We wanted to be part of this incredibly caring place and have embraced it ever since.”
Cancer has impacted the Jones family in many ways. Dana’s grandmother is a breast cancer survivor and has served as a constant reminder of this disease. Dana’s father is battling recently diagnosed metastasized lung cancer and their sister-in-law was in recent weeks given the diagnosis of glioblastoma.
Soon after joining the UNC Lineberger Board of Visitors Brent and Dana decided to make a generous gift to name the Chaplain’s office in the Cancer Center, knowing first hand that spiritual support is an important part of the healing process for cancer patients. They also made a gift toward the first annual Pediatric Retreat for Children with Cancer knowing that such a gift would make it possible for entire families to enjoy a weekend of fellowship and fun.
Brent, a former All-Pro San Francisco 49er and now a venture capital fund manager reflects: “Now that our daughter has graduated from UNC, we have a different, but equally compelling reason for returning to Chapel Hill — the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.”
